I should have been a detective was my winning drawing for the 2006 National Drawing Award, run by Artspace, and The Physics Room. My drawing was a page taken out of an old notebook, on the page was a rubbing. The rubbing revealed the words “I should have been a detective.” The rubbing technique emulated strategies used by TV detectives: the pad by the side of the phone, the top page which contained a clue since taken away, only to leave slight indentations on the page beneath, which reveals the vital clue by the use of a pencil rubbing by the clever detective.
