The Tragedy of Doctor Simms - as part of Windows, Auckland Festival AK07 - 2007

This was part of Auckland Festival AK07’s Windows exhibition, curated by Natasha Beckman. Windows went beyond the traditional gallery format and followed in the footsteps of artists working in shop windows, with early practitioners including Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. The title referenced the melancholy of the solitary artist. My work was a weeklong performance. Dressed in white overalls, I sat in the window and modified objects I had found in the Whitcoulls storeroom. I also read various books found in the store on how to gain financial success. With this I was interested in the contradiction of appearing idle yet having much grander aspirations. For the finale, I danced in the window for two hours.
